FREDERICTON - An immigration hearing is underway for a notorious U.S. fugitive captured last week in New Brunswick.

Richard Lee McNair, a convicted killer who was considered one of America's 15 most-wanted fugitives, was captured near Campbellton on Thursday, about 18 months after escaping from a Louisiana prison where he was serving a life sentence.

The hearing is a formality where McNair will be given a chance to state his case and explain how he entered Canada.

Glenn Belgard, a deputy U.S. marshal in Louisiana, says it's unclear if McNair will fight extradition.

Belgard says American authorities are anxious to put McNair back behind bars.

McNair has a history of escapes, and Belgard says he will likely spend the rest of his sentence at the super-maximum security prison in Florence, Colo.
