CANNES, France - Montreal director Denis Villeneuve picked up an award for best short at the Cannes Film Festival over the weekend.

Villeneuve's "Next Floor" was featured as part of the International Critics' Week, a parallel event of the Cannes fest that focuses on up-and-coming moviemakers. The 11-minute film tells the story of 11 pampered diners as they tear into mounds of elaborately prepared food with increasing intensity.

It's based on an original idea by Phoebe Greenberg and written by Jacques Davidts. The award is worth about C$9,000.

Villeneuve's previous films include "Un 32 aout sur terre" and "Maelstrom."

The director is currently editing "Polytechnique," his highly anticipated film about the 1989 shooting rampage that took the lives of 14 women in Montreal.
