TAIPEI, Taiwan - Taiwan's Central Weather Bureau says a moderate 6.3-magnitude earthquake has struck east of the island, and there are no immediate reports of casualties or damage.
It says the quake struck at 1:36 a.m. Sunday (1736 GMT Saturday). It was centred about 23 kilometres east of Hualien County in eastern Taiwan, some 135 kilometres southeast of the capital. The weather bureau warned residents in coastal areas to watch out for higher waves.
It did not issue a tsunami warning.
Earthquakes frequently rattle Taiwan but most are minor and cause little or no damage.
However, a 7.6-magnitude earthquake in central Taiwan in 1999 killed more than 2,300 people.
