CALGARY - Canada's natural resources minister says there will be no federal command and control over a national energy policy.

Joe Oliver is set to meet with his provincial and territorial counterparts in picturesque Kananaskis, Alberta, early next week -- about two months after taking the helm of the resource portfolio.

He says there's a consensus amongst provinces, industry, non-governmental groups and think-tanks that a pan-Canadian approach to energy is crucial.

Oliver says a shared vision for energy is key to Canada's long-term future as an energy superpower.

But he says the Harper government will respect provincial jurisdiction, and seek a collaborative approach.

Some have been critical of the meeting being sponsored several industry players.

Quebec Natural Resources Minister Nathalie Normandeau says Ottawa is trying to find ways to impose its energy policies on the provinces.

She says a pan-Canadian approach could allow Ottawa to justify its financing of Newfoundland and Labrador's hydro-electricity lines.
