LANSING, Michigan - The Michigan state legislature has taken another stab at reducing the amount of Canadian trash rolling into the state.

The state House of Representatives voted 85-24 to ban new landfills and limit expansion, except under certain conditions, until 2012.

The legislation now goes to the state Senate.

The bill also includes an amendment that would ban landfills from accepting Canadian trash.

That measure is similar to a state law signed last year, which won't take effect, unless proposed changes to U-S law permit it.

Michigan is one of the largest U-S importers of out-of-state garbage, particularly trash from Canada.

State Representative Kate Ebli, a sponsor of the legislation to limit expansions, says curbing space could help reduce its attractiveness to out-of-state importers.
