JERUSALEM - Israeli President Shimon Peres has spoken up for gay rights in a speech at a memorial rally for two people shot dead a week ago at a gay youth centre.

Police are still searching for the masked gunman who emptied a pistol into the crowd of gay teens, killing two and wounding 11. Saturday night's memorial in downtown Tel Aviv was held amid tight security.

Peres said every Israeli has "the freedom to be what they are; the right to be different and proud."

Police in Jerusalem said they arrested a man suspected of making threats over the Internet to harm participants at the rally. He is not considered a suspect in the murders.

Memorial organizers said they also received telephoned threats of violence but the event passed without incident.
