OMAHA, Neb. -- The American video journalist being treated for Ebola in Nebraska is receiving the same experimental drug being used to treat a patient in Dallas.
Nebraska Medical Center Dr. Phil Smith said Tuesday that 33-year-old Ashoka Mukpo is receiving brincidofovir, an oral medication developed to fight several other viruses.
Doctors sought federal permission to use the drug for Mukpo. It's also being used in Dallas to treat Thomas Eric Duncan, the first person diagnosed with Ebola in the U.S.
The 33-year-old Mukpo was diagnosed in Africa and flown to the Omaha hospital, which houses a specialized isolation unit to treat infectious diseases. His father says Mukpo is, as expected, experiencing some vomiting and diarrhea.
American aid worker Dr. Rick Sacra also was treated for Ebola at the Nebraska hospital.
