A new report out Friday shows auto sales are gearing up worldwide, with record volumes in emerging markets, and Canadian sales holding their own.

The numbers suggest consumer confidence is on the rise, after the global economic downturn sent auto sales plummeting.

The Global Auto Report from Scotia Economics says sales in China, India and Brazil hit a record 10.3 million units in April, up from 9.5 million in March.

Canadian passenger vehicle sales remained steady in April, at an annualized 1.42 million units for the second consecutive month.

That was well above the 1.34 million unit pace of the first quarter.

Four manufacturers -- including two Korean automakers -- reported record monthly sales, the strongest indicator yet that confidence is returning to the Canadian market.

In the United States, however, sales dipped to an average of 9.3 million vehicles from 9.5 million average during the previous three months, reflecting ongoing uncertainty in the American auto sector.
