1. Starting out:
The 30-year-old actress was born in Regina, Saskatchewan. Tatiana Maslany first honed her acting chops on the improv scene, which she started in as an elementary school student, and eventually saw her competing in the Canadian Improv Games. She moved to Toronto around the age of 20, to pursue acting. Maslany won a Gemini award in 2009, for her guest performance on the Canadian police show âFlashpoint.â
2. Orphan Black:
In 2013, Maslany landed the role of Sarah Manning in the popular sci-fi television series âOrphan Black.â The show follows Manning, the title character, who discovers, not only that there are clones of her, but they are being targeted by an assassin. Maslany has received wide acclaim for playing all of the clones, each of whom has a distinct personality. During her acceptance speech for best lead actress in a drama at the Emmy Awards on Sunday night, Maslany called her work on the show an âincredible dream jobâ and that she felt âso lucky to be on a show that puts women at the centre.â âOrphan Black,â which recently aired its fourth season, is slated to wrap up after its upcoming fifth season.
3. Awards:
Maslanyâs win last night was her first Emmy Award and her second nomination. She also received a nomination for a Golden Globe award in 2014 for her work in âOrphan Black.â The critically-acclaimed actress has also won two Criticsâ Choice Television Awards and three Canadian Screen Awards.
4. Other notable roles:
The Canadian actress has had a wide-ranging variety of roles in television and film. Some of her more noteworthy performances include starring in the 2009 film âGrown up Movie Star,â the title role in the TV miniseries âThe Nativity,â and playing a younger version of Helen Mirrenâs character in âWoman in Gold.â She also recently starred in the film âThe Other Halfâ alongside her real-life boyfriend, actor Tom Cullen.
5. Upcoming projects:
Despite the looming end of âOrphan Blackâ, The future looks bright for Maslanyâs acting career. She has been busy on the TV series âRobot Chickenâ and âBoJack Horsemanâ, as well as the films âTwo Lovers and a Bearâ and âStrongerâ with actor Jake Gyllenhaal about the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013.
