TORONTO -- Toronto filmmaker Sarah Polley, Ottawa actress Sandra Oh and Montreal-based "Rebelle" director Kim Nguyen are among the Canadians who have been invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

The organization behind the annual Academy Awards extended 276 invitations total to actors, directors, writers, publicists, producers and other people working in the film industry.

Other actors to make the cut included Jason Bateman, Lucy Liu, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Jennifer Lopez.

Newly invited directors included "Bridesmaids" helmer Paul Feig, Catherine Hardwicke of "Twilight" and Todd Phillips, who directed the "Hangover" series.

Among the other notable names to receive invitations were pop star Prince, "The Simpsons" creator Matt Groening and "Girls" star/scribe Lena Dunham.

"These individuals are among the best filmmakers working in the industry today," said Academy president Hawk Koch in a release. "Their talent and creativity have captured the imagination of audiences worldwide, and I am proud to welcome each of them to the Academy."
