Gary Oldman thinks that he needed more of a⌠serious approach to his work playing Sirius Black in the âHarry Potterâ movies.
âI think my work is mediocre in it,â Oldman remarked on Thursdayâs episode of the , adding, âmaybe if I had read the booksâ like his late co-star Alan Rickman did, heâd feel differently.
Had he gotten âahead of the curveâ like Rickman, he said, âif I had known whatâs coming I honestly think I wouldâve played it differently.â
Oldman portrayed Black, Potterâs long-lost godfather and a framed fugitive who turns out to be the titular prisoner from the third film, 2004âs âPrisoner of Azkaban.â
But itâs not just his role in the âPotterâ movies that Oldman is self-critical about.
âIâd put it all on a fire and burn it and do it all again,â he said of his acting portfolio. This includes his iconic 1992 role as Dracula in âBram Stokerâs Dracula,â a performance he said that heâs also ânot crazy about.â
The Oscar-winner did, however, say that his tendency to ânitpickâ his own work is a healthy habit that boils down to just wanting âto make the next thing better.â
Oldman appeared as Black in four of the eight âPotterâ franchise films â based on the book series by author J.K Rowling â including âAzkaban,â 2005âs âGoblet of Fire,â 2007âs âOrder of the Phoenixâ and briefly in the 2011 conclusion âDeathly Hallows: Part 2.â
He also reunited with the cast in 2022 during the âHarry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwartsâ special on Max. (CNN and Max are both part of the same parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery.)
