EDMONTON - An Edmonton man who killed and dismembered his wife in 2009 has been sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for at least 17 years.

Fifty-four-year-old Tesfai Negasi was convicted of second-degree murder earlier this year.

A conviction of second-degree murder carries an automatic life sentence, but the court had to determine parole eligibility.

Negasi's trial heard that in July 2009, he drove to police headquarters, confessed to officers and directed them to body parts wrapped in plastic bags in the trunk of his car.

Jurors were told the couple had an unhappy relationship and that Selamawit Negasi had an appointment with a divorce lawyer at the time she was killed.
