HALIFAX - New Democrat MP Nathan Cullen says he is sticking to his proposal to join forces with the Liberals in the next election.

And, that plan drew fire from his fellow leadership contenders during their latest debate yesterday in Halifax.

Thomas Mulcair slammed the idea, asking Cullen why he would "shoot for the bronze medal" when Canadians share the NDP's goals and vision.

Peggy Nash added that Cullen's proposal would strip Canadians of their democratic right to vote for the party of their choice.

In response, Cullen said his ultimate goal is to oust the Conservatives from power and bring in a proportional representation voting system.

Niki Ashton, Brian Topp and Romeo Saganash are also vying to replace the late Jack Layton as NDP leader.

They all took turns attacking the Conservative record on health and pensions.

Other debates every two weeks are planned in Quebec City, Winnipeg, Montreal and Vancouver leading to the leadership convention in Toronto on March 24th.
