A tourist from Canada is missing in Afghanistan and may have been kidnapped by the Taliban.
The Department of Foreign Affairs identified the missing man as Colin Rutherford.
Spokesperson Emmanuelle Lamoureux said the department is in communication with Rutherford's family and Afghan officials to gain Rutherford's "safe release."
Meanwhile, the Taliban said that it was holding a Canadian whom they captured in the city of Gazni, southwest of Kabul.
Lamoureux said Canadian authorities are aware of a Taliban statement, which was issued early Sunday and reported by Afghan media.
Foreign Affairs warns Canadians on its website to "avoid all travel" to Afghanistan, saying tourists who travel to the country despite the warning "take serious risks."
"Terrorism is a continuous threat throughout Afghanistan," reads the travel warning. "The threat to foreign nationals, including Canadians, from terrorist and criminal violence is extremely high."
The warning says there is "an extreme risk" to foreign nationals of being kidnapped in the war-torn country, particularly for ransom.
