A 21-year-old woman suspected of abducting a day-old infant from a Quebec hospital has been formally charged.

Valerie Poulin-Collins is facing charges of kidnapping and abduction of person after a newborn girl was taken Monday night from a Trois-Rivieres hospital.

According to spokesperson for the Crown prosecutor, Poulin-Collins is still being held in the same hospital from which the baby was taken.

The 21-year-old is on a ventilator, Jean-Pascal Boucher said, after an apparent attempt to injure herself.

“For now, the medical situation of the accused is that she can’t appear in court,” he said.

Boucher added that Poulin-Collins will face the charges when she is well enough to appear in court.

The newborn – named Victoria – was abducted from the Ville-Marie hospital on Monday evening by a woman who was dressed as a nurse.

Police quickly issued an Amber Alert and released a photo of the suspect. The baby was safely located within three hours and returned to her parents.
