With day seven of Rio Games well under way, there’s plenty of action on the ground in Brazil. But many people who don’t have front row seats to the events are heading to social media to keep up to date on #Rio2016.

Here at home, Twitter has been abuzz as the country watches our #TeamCanada athletes battle for the gold.

Interesting fact? Nine of the 10 top searched athletes are females.

The top mentioned athlete is Penny Oleksiak. She became Canada’s sweetheart this week after winning Canada's on Thursday

Olesiak tied for gold in the 100-metre freestyle with Simone Manuel from the U.S. Their time of 52.70 also broke a record.

The 16-year-old from Toronto is the first Canadian to win four medals at a single Summer Games. Earlier in the week she won silver in the butterfly and two bronzes in the freestyle relays.

Her hard work hasn’t gone unnoticed online.

Olesiak has gained thousands of new followers in the past week alone.

The athlete took to Twitter to share her joy over the win.

As did our prime minister. Justin Trudeau has been sending his well wishes to the #TeamCanada athletes on social media all week.

There were also many people on Twitter who made a play on Oleksiak's name and the Canadian penny, including her brother NHL defenceman Jamie Oleksiak.
