Police are investigating after two people were found dead in a car parked on a residential street near an elementary school in Winnipeg.

Witnesses said they noticed condensation on the windows of a blue car parked on College Avenue in Winnipeg’s north end.

Police called to the scene around 11 a.m. on Monday, discovered a man and a woman dead in the vehicle.

The discovery prompted police to shut access to the street and call in forensic investigators and a medical examiner.

Winnipeg police Const. Jason Michalyshen called the discovery unusual.

“That we locate one or multiple individuals deceased within a vehicle, parked on a residential street -- that’s uncommon,” Michalyshen told CTV Winnipeg.

Police say they are not sure how long it had been parked there.

After the grim discovery, students were kept inside the school for most of the day as a precaution.

Officers also covered the vehicle’s windows with a black sheet.

While students remained in their classrooms, the car was picked up by a flatbed truck and hauled away.

Police say there is no public safety risk and it’s important to conduct the investigation with respect to the nearby students, and the victims and their families.

“There are just certain things that we don’t need to put on display in the community and we want to be very mindful of what people see and what young children might be subjected to,” Michalysen said.

The discovery of two bodies so close to her son’s school left Alicia Chartrand feeling uneasy.

“It’s scary because I don’t know what was going on,” Chartrand said.

One witness told CTV Winnipeg he saw the bodies, as well as drug paraphernalia, in the car.

Police on Monday told CTV Winnipeg that they were working on identifying the victims and notifying their families.
