A Canadian man has drowned while vacationing in Cuba.

The incident happened on a beach in Varadero, located on the northwest part of the island.

Witnesses say the man was in the water, waving and yelling for help. Three lifeguards ran in help, but were unable to rescue him.

Another man believed to be from Cuba also drowned while trying to rescue the Canadian.

The Department of Foreign Affairs has not released the Canadian man’s age or identity, but officials say they are in touch with local authorities and are prepared to provide consular assistance to the man’s family.
