VANCOUVER -- Canada's "Prince of Pot" is expected to be released from prison in the United States within days, but it could be weeks before Marc Emery and his followers can celebrate his freedom.
His wife, Jodie Emery, says Marc's sentence ends on Wednesday, then he'll be transported to a private deportation facility, where he'll wait for a flight to Detroit and then a transfer across the border.
Emery, who's now 56, was extradited to Seattle in May 2010 and pleaded guilty to selling marijuana seeds from Canada to American customers before serving his time in several U.S. prisons.
His release coincides with Washington state's first recreational marijuana stores opening for business this week, and his wife says Emery deserves much of the credit.
Jodie Emery says Canada has suffered in her activist husband's absence, but believes the U.S. had to lead the way in marijuana legalization so that other nations could look to its example.
She says she expects many supporters to herald his arrival, after which they'll launch a cross-Canada marijuana advocacy and political tour and then fly to Europe for several speaking engagements.
