One of five students from a Canadian university who were in Nice, France when Thursday’s terror attack occurred remains missing while the other four are safe.

Ukrainian national Mykhaylo (Misha) Bazelevskyy, 22, had not been located as of Friday afternoon, according to MacEwan University in Edmonton.

MacEwan Provost John Corlett told reporters that Bazelevskyy and a male student had gone down to the Promenade des Anglais to watch Bastille Day fireworks when a terrorist drove into crowds of revellers, killing at least 84.

Corlett said the male student who was with Misha was “quite close†to the attack and “feels fortunate to be alive.â€

He said that three other Canadian students had begun heading toward the promenade earlier in the evening, but turned around due to bad weather.

The other four students participating in a 15-day study abroad trip are Derek Anderson, Alanna Brokop, Ismail Khalil and Rebecca Smillie. Corlett said they are safe and in the student residence the five of them share.

Corlett said Bazelevskyy is a landed immigrant with family in Canada and parents in Ukraine, who are aware that he is missing. He said Ukraine has consular officials on the ground working to locate Bazelevskyy.

Global Affairs Canada will only say that it is “aware of a situation involving a student from MacEwan University and have reached out to the University for more detail.â€

Amy Beard, from the school’s student union, described Bazelevskyy as a “good-hearted person,†known for his involvement in athletics and student politics.

“It’s pretty emotional right now,†she said. “We are just trying to stay positive.â€
