MONTREAL - Natural Resources Minister Christian Paradis says the Canadian government will learn from the disastrous leak spewing oil into the Gulf of Mexico.

Paradis says the National Energy Board will take the massive oil leak into account as it reviews its drilling policies.

"The events that took place in the United States must be part of their study," Paradis said Tuesday in Montreal.

"Obvisouly, they will look into this very carefully to see if we can take away some lessons, and be sure that in Canada our regulations will always be the most exhaustive, the most complete and the most responsible."

Several oil companies with interests in the Arctic have been pressing the energy board to relax its rule that requires relief wells to be built.

Relief wells help contain oil spills in the event of a blow-out.

More than 750,000 litres of oil a day have been gushing from the sea floor since the BP offshore-drilling platform exploded and sank last month killing 11 workers.
