NEW GLASGOW, N.S. - Green Party Leader Elizabeth May says it's irresponsible for the federal government to cancel a multi-billion dollar plan to procure new vessels for the navy and Coast Guard.

The Conservatives said Friday it had scuttled the navy's $2.9 billion project to replace its aging supply ships, as well as the purchase of patrol ships for the Coast Guard.

In a release on Sunday, May says the ships are necessary for day-to-day operations.

She says the Coast Guard protects many who work at sea in Atlantic Canada, and that ending the program could put lives at risk.

The government said the bill for the ships was significantly higher than they were willing to pay.

Public Works Minister Christian Paradis said in a release the government must ensure Canadian taxpayers get the best value for their money.
