If ever there was a perennial family of plants that we could brand ‘Canadian' this would be it, in my opinion.

Hostas are hardy to zone 2 or 3 (helloWhitehorse!), they tolerate a wide variety of soil conditions, attract hummingbirds while in bloom, the flowers can be cut to bring indoors to enjoy and the are available in pint-sized miniatures to 1.2-metre giants.

There is variety, colour, fragrance (with some varieties) and an opportunity to dig and divide them every four or five years.

Hostas appeal to the thrifty and the venturesome gardener alike!

Mind you, they do have one enemy and that would be the slug (and snail which is a slug with a shell). Control these with Green Earth Slug control and you are all set.
