Even if you have not had any hummingbirds visit your garden this season, this may be the one opportunity for you to witness the incredible phenomenon of these little one once creatures hooving around your yard.

The reason is that they are flying south now, coming of the boreal forest breeding ground of northern Canada on their way to Central and South America (another miracle!). As they travel south they are looking for sources of nectar-rich food that will build up their body fat to sustain them on their long journey.

This is the prefect time of year to plant many of the flowering plants in your garden that hummers find attractive. Also, if you were ever to put out a humming bird feeder, this is it.

With apologies to my friends in Newfoundland, who do not get to enjoy the hummingbird: perhaps someday we will figure out a way to fix that. In the mean time it is in the hands of Mother Nature.
