An Ontario senior citizen who was abandoned as a child has finally met her brothers and sister after decades of searching.
Jean Fish, 86, learned at age 21 that she had been abandoned as a baby, and began looking for her birth family. She was on the verge of giving up when, on her 85th birthday, Fish’s granddaughter found her relatives with the genealogy website Ancestry.ca.
Sandra Bonney, Fish’s daughter, told CTV Regina that she never thought her mother would find them.
Fish made the trip to Regina from her home in Ontario in the company of her daughter and granddaughters over the weekend.
Meanwhile, her two biological brothers and one sister journeyed from other parts of the country to meet their long-lost sister.
Faye Viergutz, Fish’s biological sister, said the meeting was surreal. “It’s just amazing that this has happened,†she added. “Sometimes I have to pinch myself.â€
Though Fish won’t have the chance to meet her biological parents, she said she’s thankful for the opportunity to meet her siblings. “It’s a miracle I never thought would happen," she said.
Bonney agreed. “There’s a lot of similarities between a lot of us, and there’s a bond that’s already there.â€
