Why you shouldn't wear "running shoes" for everything!
Most runners have great support/cushioning for forward motion, but not much support for side to side motion (making it easy to go over on your ankle). If you are doing a team sport or fitness classes, you might want a different type of shoe. If you are doing many different things, you may want a cross trainer. A good general rule - if you are doing a specific activity like running three times a week, you may want a specific shoe for that activity.
What to look for in a running shoe!
- Weight - want it to be light
- Fit - tow box roominess, heel snugness, and arch comfort
- Cushioning - heel absorption, forefoot absorption
- Stability - shoe's tendency to roll in/out
- Breathability - how well moisture evaporates.
Other shopping tips:
- Shop after a workout...your feet tend to grow a bit when you workout, so it's good to try them on after you work.
- Get your foot measured every time you shop
- Go to a store where people know what they're talking about (ie - New Balance is really good, National Sport okay, Sport Check not great)
When is it time to replace:
- Some will give KM markers for runners - my general rule is about a year. Things to look for that may indicate it's time for new shoes:
- Look at the back of your shoe - if it's worn on an angle, it might be time for a new pair...and an indication that your feet naturally roll in our out (supinate or pronate)
- Development of shin splints/foot aches
- Compacted cushioning at the back/sides of shoe (looks squished)
