A 2001 Volkswagen Golf with over 100,000 kilometres on the odometer has attracted a top bid of close to $75,000 in an online auction -- tens of thousands of dollars more than the book value for the car.

What makes this blue VW special is the fact it was once owned by Catherine Middleton, now the Duchess of Cambridge and wife of Prince William.

Bidding on the car closed Sunday with a final bid of 48,100 pounds, or approximately $74,500.

However, the reserve price for the car -- the minimum amount the owner will accept for the item -- was not met. The reserve price was not listed on the ad.

The eBay ad was posted by Sonny Brazil, whose father owns Motor Carriage Co., a dealership in Berkshire, U.K.

In the ad, Brazil said Kate passed the car on to her brother James Middleton, before it was traded in to his father's dealership and eventually ended up in his possession.

The blue, manual transmission Golf comes with "all invoices and bills" including a log book that documents Kate Middleton as the previous owner, the ad states.

"I do believe this will be the best piece of Royal History anyone could have," Brazil said in the ad.

Bidding began on July 18, with five interested parties posting 23 bids for the car.

In the ad, Brazil noted that a pair of cufflinks which he found in the car, had been removed from the deal.

"After careful consideration I feel these may have personal connections to the Middletons. So I have decided to pass the cufflinks back to the Middleton family," he stated.

"I feel that this is where they belong regardless of any value."

A 10-year-old Volkswagen Golf is typically worth between $5,000 and $6,000.
