With the Olympics soon approaching, more and more people will be sitting around the family room; glued to their televisions watching the Games.

New technology allows for clearer moving pictures and brighter screens; making you feel like you are in the stands at the Vancouver games! If you have been thinking of a new television, here are a few options and designer rules for implementing a flat screen television into your home:

Televisions featured on the show are from Panasonic:

How do I measure for the size of television screen? Don't measure from left to right of screen. Measure diagonally from bottom left to top right corners. This will give you the size of your television. What distance should I sit away from the television?

SCREEN SIZE vs. SITTING DISTANCE: 20"/5-6 feet 32"/8-9 feet 42"/10-12 feet 50"/13-14 feet 65"/16-18 feet.

What is the proper viewing height? The middle of the television screen should be between 42-52 inches from floor. Anything higher and you should tilt the television down into the room for better viewing comfort.

What about hanging a television over a fireplace? Just as you would hang a painting or mirror, the bottom of the television should be 3-8 inches above the mantel. For good proportion, the television should be approximately 2/3 the width of the mantel.

If there is no mantel, then the television should be no wider than the firebox below. In almost all cases, a tilting bracket will be needed to tilt the television downward into the room for easier viewing.
