OTTAWA - A review of Canada's nuclear power plants is being done to ensure they are as ready as they can be to deal with potential disasters.
The ongoing crisis at the nuclear power plant in northern Japan has prompted the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission to set up a task force to evaluate Canada's plants.
It will examine the plans, procedures and guidelines the plants have for dealing with severe accident scenarios like that faced by the Japanese plant on March 11 when it was crippled by an earthquake-triggered tsunami.
The task force will then recommend measures to address any major problems at the plants, and whether design changes are warranted.
It could also recommend potential changes to CNSC regulatory requirements, inspection programs and policies for new nuclear power plants.
The task force members are senior CNSC experts in reactor design, safety assessment, and emergency preparedness.
