MONTREAL - BlackBerry maker Research In Motion has been given an extended deadline to satisfy demands by the Indian government to have access to its encrypted email and instant messaging services, says a report.

The deadline has been extended until Jan. 31, the Economic Times newspaper reported Tuesday.

The Indian government had threatened to shut down the BlackBerry services in that country if access to the services wasn't provided by the Canadian smartphone maker.

RIM has been in a stand-off with the Indian security agencies, which cite the threat of terrorism for their demand for access to encrypted messages sent by BlackBerrys.

RIM couldn't be reached for comment on Tuesday.

The Economic Times newspaper cited a ministry note from the Indian government saying the deadline would be extended.

It has been reported that RIM has granted manual access to its messenger service with a pledge of real-time access early next year, but the BlackBerry maker hasn't confirmed it.

Last Friday, the United Arab Emirates withdrew a threatened ban on Blackberry services.

Shares in Research In Motion at $49.98 Tuesday morning on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
