OTTAWA - Talk of banning fighting in hockey has some fans ready to drop the gloves, a new poll suggests.

A huge majority of people who describe themselves as avid fans -- 76 per cent -- oppose a fight ban, says the Decima survey.

The only respondents who favour a ban _ by a margin of 52 per cent to 30 _ are those who say they don't follow hockey.

Among those who follow the game occasionally, 43 per cent want fighting out of the game while 52 per cent are opposed.

The poll of 1,000 people was conducted last week after NHL vice-president Colin Campbell said he was willing to examine a ban on fighting.
