PARIS - Cannes Film Festival organizers say new movies by superstar directors Terrence Malick and Pedro Almodovar are among 19 films in the running for this year's top prize, the Palme d'Or.

Other top directors with movies in competition at the 64th edition of the prestigious festival include Denmark's Lars Von Trier, with "Melancholia," Turkey's Nuri Bilge Ceylan, with "Once Upon a Time in Anatolia," and Belgium's Dardenne brothers, with "Set Me Free."

Malick's "Tree of Life," about a family in the 1950s, stars Brad Pitt, while Almodovar's "The Skin I Live In" features Antonio Banderas in the story of a plastic surgeon bent on exacting vigilante justice.

The French Riviera festival will take place May 11-22. American actor Robert De Niro heads the jury this year.
