ATHENS -- Health officials in Greece say an overhauled AIDS-prevention program has helped curb an alarming spike in the number of cases among drug users.
The state-run Organization Against Drugs, OKANA, says the number of new recorded HIV infections among drug users for January to October 2013 dropped to 230 from 506 for the same period last year.
The figures were released ahead of World AIDS Day on Saturday, when more detailed data is to be released.
New infections among drug users in Greece spiked 1,500 per cent between 2011 and 2012, despite a general decline elsewhere in Europe.
But despite funding cuts in crisis-hit Greece, the state agency expanded clean-needle programs and access points.
