SANAA, Yemen - A Yemeni medical official says fighting between government forces and opposition fighters in the central city of Taiz has killed at least nine members of the pro-opposition militia and civilians.

Abdel-Raziq al-Gabri, a field hospital doctor, says security forces on Wednesday randomly shelled several neighborhoods in Taiz, where pro-opposition fighters had taken over a government building in the city centre.

Taiz has been a hotbed of Yemen's uprising that erupted eight months ago, inspired by Arab revolts elsewhere and demanding President Ali Abdullah Saleh step down.

Al-Gabri says 40 people were wounded, including opposition fighters.

The Defence Ministry says security forces had to respond after the opposition took over some government buildings and banks in Taiz.
