KANDAHAR, Afghanistan - Canada's new governor general chose Kandahar, Afghanistan as the site of his first foreign trip as the Queen's Representative.

David Johnston is now on his way back to Canada after a whirlwind tour of the country's war zone.

He wore combat fatigues as he met with troops at Kandahar Airfield and in the volatile Panjwaii district.

He also attended a shura, or meeting, with Kandahar Governor Tooryalai Wesa.

The military garb was a surprise, given Johnston had said in the past he was unlikely to wear the uniform.

But he says he felt very proud to wear it given the quality of the country's military.
