TORONTO - The new president of General Motors Canada says he believes the automaker can capture more than 16 per cent of the Canadian vehicle market this year.

Kevin Williams says the initial goal was to take 15.5 per cent of the market, but GM has already come close to reaching that target so he's pushing the company to do better.

Ford is currently leading Canadian sales at 16 per cent of the market.

So far this year, GM has sold 15.4 per cent of the vehicles bought in Canada.

That was down from more than 19 per cent last year, when the automaker underwent a massive restructuring and eliminated several of its brands to focus on Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick and GMC.

Williams says GM could do even better in Canada this year, but it "doesn't want to play the incentive game" to attract customers like it has in the past.
