DAVOS, Switzerland - Federal Finance Minister Jim Flaherty is concerned that countries will move towards a policy of protectionism despite statements to the contrary.

The minister is attending the 39th World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, which runs until Sunday.

Flaherty says protectionism is a populist policy that only works in the short-term by giving unemployed workers the impression that their government is addressing their concerns.

World leaders at the Forum all agreed that protectionism would slow any economic recovery.

The minister also says he's ready take further measures to stimulate the Canadian economy if necessary.

He announced a $40-billion stimulus package last week.
