TORONTO - The Dominion Institute has entered the bidding for what may be an important piece of Canadiana that unexpectedly turned up for sale on eBay.

A card, apparently signed by Sir John A. Macdonald, Canada's first prime minister, is being offered on the  by Patti Kelly of Worchester, Mass. On Monday morning it was drawing bids for as low as $45.

But bids soon jumped to more than $2,000 after media reports of the signed card began to circulate.

Jeremy Diamond, director of programs for the Dominion Institute, said that the signature on the card has not been verified.

But it has piqued the interest of the organization, which is dedicated to preserving Canada's history and artifacts.

The item is also said to have attracted the attention of the Prime Minister's Office.
