TORONTO - More than one million Facebook users are pledging their support for U.S. presidential candidates or just urging Americans to vote.

About 1.4 million users of the social networking website -- including those in Canada -- are taking advantage of an election day feature to `donate' their status.

They can either declare their support for John McCain, Barack Obama, a write-in candidate or steer clear of partisanship and select `Just get out the vote!'

The selection then becomes the user's status update line, which is displayed to other Facebook friends.

Obama's campaign in particular, which collected US$640 million and shattered fundraising records, made heavy use of Internet and multimedia electioneering.

A 7.3. per cent rise in voter registration numbers suggests a large number of Americans are engaged in this election, and officials are bracing for a record voter turnout.
