Facebook is the latest web giant to name Justin Bieber as one of the trends of the year.

The pop star was sixth on Facebook's top 10 list of the year's big trends.

While Bieber mentions were popular on the site last year too, they continued to grow throughout the year.

In a blog post, Facebook says Bieber's appearance on the MTV Video Music Awards in September resulted in the most mentions of him.

In recent days, Google and Twitter also said the 16-year-old from Stratford, Ont., was one of the most active topics of the year.

The No. 1 trend on Facebook was the acronym HMU, which stands for hit me up, digital slag for get in contact. Facebook says the trend started slowly sometime in mid-2009 and picked up steam throughout the year at a rate of about 75 per cent a month.

The second biggest trend was talk about the World Cup, which at times represented half of the status updates posted to Facebook.

Talk about the year's big movies -- including "Toy Story 3," "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse," "Inception," "Alice in Wonderland" and "Iron Man 2" -- was third on the list, the iPad and iPhone 4 were fourth, Haiti was fifth, online games like FarmVille were seventh, and the Chilean miners were eighth.

"Airplanes" was the ninth biggest topic, mostly because of the B.o.B song of the same name. Facebook users were fond of quoting the lines: "Can we pretend that airplanes/In the night sky/Are like shooting stars?"

And the 10th biggest trend was talk about 2011 and the year ahead.
