New College of Florida

Sarasota, FL

About This Campus

New College of Florida is the state's public honors college. Founded in 1960, the College is nationally acclaimed and recognized for its innovative approach to learning. Independent study, original research, and experiential learning are strongly encouraged. Grades are not awarded. Instead, Â鶹´«Ã½s receive narrative evaluations written by faculty, and coursework is evaluated on demonstrated mastery of material (Pass/Fail). Classes are small, typically not larger than 20 Â鶹´«Ã½s. January serves as the College's Independent Study Period (ISP). Students secure project approval from faculty in the Fall term and complete their projects in January. Projects may be completed on or off-campus. (NSE coordinators should determine with both the home and host institutions whether the ISP will be a part of the Â鶹´«Ã½'s schedule and how this would affect the Â鶹´«Ã½'s costs, financial aid budget and return to the schedule of the home institution.)

Location Information

New College's waterfront location on Sarasota Bay provides excellent research opportunities and a beautiful natural setting. The campus is a short drive from Florida Gulf beaches and shares shoreline with the adjacent Ringling Museum and historic Asolo Theater. Students have easy access to the Sarasota-Bradenton airport and to public transportation into downtown Sarasota. Tampa International Airport (50 miles from campus) is served by multiple shuttle services.

Helpful Information

The College does not award grades or grade point averages. It is important to clarify in advance with the home institution, how New College courses will transfer to the Â鶹´«Ã½'s degree program. Students will receive narrative evaluations on all coursework, but there is no formula to convert the narratives to grades or a grade point average.
