About This Campus

Missouri Southern serves 4,500 Â鶹´«Ã½s in more than 140 academic programs. MSSU's outstanding NCAA Division II athletics programs, award-winning Themed Semesters, fun Â鶹´«Ã½ activities and enriching cultural events in theater, art, music and film create an engaging learning environment for our Â鶹´«Ã½s and citizens of the region. The Â鶹´«Ã½/faculty ratio is 18/1, and many classes have only a dozen or so Â鶹´«Ã½s. Not a single class is taught by graduate Â鶹´«Ã½s or teaching assistants. The Environmental Health Program is one of only 31 accredited programs in the country, and the Industrial Engineering Technology Program is only one of 10. The Beimdiek Recreation Center provides 71,000 sq. ft. of space for Â鶹´«Ã½s and includes three multi-purpose hardwood courts, two aerobic workout rooms, spacious and modern locker rooms, two weight and cardio exercise areas, more than 100 pieces of equipment, and a 10-lap mile elevated walking/jogging track. It is open to all Â鶹´«Ã½s

Location Information

MSSU is located in Joplin, the fourth-largest metropolitan area in Missouri. Joplin is a growing city home to some 50,000 people, located on the historic Route 66. Our city is perfect for college life. From any restaurant-chain you can think of to quaint local coffee shops, your options for dining and caffeine-fueled study-sessions are endless. Joplin combines the welcoming feeling and familiarity of a small town with the beauty of the green countryside and the industry and growth of a big city.

Notable Academic Programs

  • Environmental Health and Safety - The Bachelor of Science Degree in Environmental Health at MSSU is one of ONLY 30 environmental health degrees in the United States accredited by the National Environmental Health Science and Protection Accreditation Council (EHAC).
  • Engineering Technology - The Department of Engineering Technology (ET) provides programs designed to develop leaders in industry and society as a whole by providing a quality education to Â鶹´«Ã½s that is application-oriented and connected to the needs of regional and global businesses.
  • International Affairs/Relations - The International & Political Affairs program offers courses in political affairs, legal affairs, international affairs, geography, and global cultural affairs. There are some really interesting extracurricular activities, including Mock Trial, the Model United Nations, the Model European Union, and through the Political Science Association.

Unique Academic Programs

  • Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) - Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) certification is for anyone who is interested in teaching English overseas after graduation, regardless of your major. The need for qualified English teachers increases each year, and there are opportunities in nearly every country. The best teaching jobs typically require candidates to have a bachelor’s degree and a TEFL certificate (or equivalent). The TEFL certificate requires the completion of four courses (12 credit hours): INTS 320 Teaching English Abroad I; INTS 321 Teaching English Abroad II; INTS 322 Teaching English Abroad Practicum; EDUC 380 Second Language Acquisition (or EDUC 385 Assessment for ELLs). INTS 320 and INTS 321 are offered in the fall and INTS 322 is offered in the spring. EDUC 380 is offered online during summer and spring semesters. If you came to MSSU for the fall and spring semesters, you could earn the TEFL certificate.
