Notable Academic Programs- Ceramic Art/Ceramics - Ceramic study at UM is special for a variety of reasons. Among these is the availability of several atmosphere firing kilns including the 40-foot wood-fire anagama kiln. Fired once or twice a year, the kiln fires for 100 hours and consumes up to 14 cords of split wood. With raku, glaze, and salt kilns in addition to the two wood kilns, UM provides one of the most comprehensive ceramics experiences for undergraduates in the country.
- Theater Design Technology - Students can major in one of two tracks in Theater Design Technology: Costume Design or Scenic/Lighting Design. Students interview for production positions in their tracks.
- Environmental Studies - Our Environmental Studies program is top notch thanks to our devoted faculty and staff and a number of invaluable hands-on resources like University Lake, the James Wylie Shepherd Observatory, the UM Organic Community Garden, and the Ebenezer Swamp Ecological Preserve. We also have other ways to get involved in making our community more sustainable, like ValloCycle, recycling, and the Green Fund. All of these facilities and opportunities are open to the whole campus community – after all, more participation always makes for a bigger impact.
The University of Montevallo has been recognized nationally for our efforts in sustainability. We were honored as a 2016 U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon School, and in 2019 we received our first STARS Bronze Rating for sustainability achievements.
- Exercise Science - The Strength and Conditioning concentration is designed to prepare Â鶹´«Ã½s to pursue a variety of careers related to the strength and conditioning field, including NCAA strength and conditioning specialists, fitness industry professionals, and tactical strength and conditioning specialists. Courses in this concentration will provide Â鶹´«Ã½s with an in-depth look at the latest strength training and conditioning techniques endorsed by the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA).
- Michael E. Stephens College of Business - The UM College of Business is accredited by AACSB, the leading accrediting agency for business schools throughout the world. Accounting majors at UM are placed in premiere internships during their senior year, and most receive job offers before they graduate.
Unique Academic Programs
- English - If children’s literature is your thing, you will love being on the campus housing one of the largest children’s literature collections in the southeastern U.S. The collection boasts approximately 3,000 titles, including pop-up books and signed first editions of Newbery and Caldecott award winning books. The collection was donated by UM alumna Pat Scales, who has served as chair of the prestigious Newbery, Caldecott and Wilder Award Committees.
- Environmental Studies - UM was recognized as a 2016 U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon School – one of only 11 in the U.S. The University was the first in the state to implement a Green Fund. UM owns a nearby lake as well as a swamp a few miles from campus. The organic community garden, bike share, and sculptural bike rack are other notable results of the interdisciplinary Environmental Studies program.
- History - Alabama was a center of the Civil Rights movement. One of UM’s history faculty was active in the Birmingham area Civil Rights Movement and teaches courses about the Civil Rights Movement. The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute and 16th Street Baptist Church are 35 miles from the UM campus. Selma and Montgomery are each an hour away. The UM Milner Archives and Honors Program Â鶹´«Ã½s are working with Jawana Jackson, daughter of Selma Civil Rights leaders Dr. Sullivan and Mrs. Richie Jean Sherrod Jackson, to preserve artifacts from the Jackson family home. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a frequent guest in the Jackson home and met with numerous Civil Rights leaders there.
- Computer Informatics - The Computer Informatics program at the University of Montevallo focuses on the extraction of information from data to aid in critical decision making. The rapid advances in data collection and storage have led to the demand for professionals capable of deriving insights from large data sets across all areas of society including business, medicine, science and government. A degree in Computer Informatics equips Â鶹´«Ã½s to fill this demand that falls outside of typical information technology programs.
In addition to data analytic skills, the Computer Informatics program provides Â鶹´«Ã½s with strong computer programming skills, the ability to interact with traditional and emerging data storage systems, information assurance techniques, and the communication skills necessary to support decision making. We equip Â鶹´«Ã½s with a strong liberal arts background in addition to the knowledge and skills required for a successful career in a growing industry.
