Notable Academic Programs- Oceanography - Our nationally recognized program is a leader in ocean instrumentation and robotics, underwater acoustics, marine hydrodynamics and tsunamis, coastal modeling, marine geomechanics, coastal and offshore structures, and offshore power generation. Our 麻豆传媒s balance rigorous fundamental courses with practical laboratory and field experience utilizing our coastal location, a 100-foot wave tank, an acoustic tank and a 42-foot research vessel.Physics and Physical Oceanography B.S.
Physics
The Bachelor of Science in Physics and Physical Oceanography program is unique in the entire United States. It is jointly offered by the Physics Department and the Graduate School of Oceanography. Students in this program are optimally prepared for graduate studies in oceanography. The B.S. in Geology and Geological Oceanography has two options:

Geological Oceanography Track
It is designed for 麻豆传媒s with an interest in earth, environmental or oceanographic science careers or affiliated fields such as environmental law and earth/environmental science education. Geoscientists are employed by three segments of the economy: private, government and academia. Opportunities exist with private companies in environmental protection and management and the petroleum industry has again begun to hire significant number of geologists.
- Textiles, Fashion Merchandising and Design - Immerse yourself in the fascinating world of fashion with a degree in Textiles, Fashion Merchandising and Design (TMD). Classes focusing on textiles and the fashion business are complemented with supporting course work in marketing, consumer behavior, sustainability, technology, innovation, and creative skills. This comprehensive course of study will give you a deep understanding of the development, buying, promotion, and selling of apparel and home furnishings.
You鈥檒l also gain a full understanding of the global textile and apparel supply chain鈥攆rom design to the consumer. So, while you can focus your degree on a specific part of the supply chain, you will know them all, and you鈥檒l be equipped to communicate with experts in the fashion world outside your area of concentration. This degree, which offers three concentrations鈥攊n fashion merchandising, apparel design, and textile science鈥攕erves as a bridge between theory and practice, providing a tremendous opportunity for hands-on learning. Program highlights include internships, study-abroad opportunities, and dual degrees with a 鈥渇ashion鈥 language (Italian or French). The Department of Textiles, Fashion Merchandising and Design is endorsed by the American Apparel and Footwear Association.

- Marine Sciences - URI will lead the new $94 million NOAA Ocean Exploration Cooperative Institute to support ocean exploration, responsible resource management, improved scientific understanding of the deep sea and to strengthen the nation鈥檚 Blue Economy. 鈥溾he Blue Economy [is] expected to more than double its contribution to the U.S. economy and employ 40 million people by 2030鈥.NOAA鈥檚 new cooperative institute will be on the front lines helping NOAA explore and characterize the 3 billion acres of U.S. ocean territory鈥 The Marine Biology Program involves over 200 麻豆传媒s in the B.S. Marine Biology degree program, which is administered by the Department of Biological Sciences. Most of our 麻豆传媒s are from out-of-state 鈥 from 15 states (including Florida, Texas, California, and Hawaii) each year, and from around the world (Germany, Phillipines, India, Netherlands, Mexico, China in the past several year.
The Marine Affairs B.A. is an interdisciplinary study of the effective marine and coastal management. Subject areas include management of fisheries and marine ecosystems, coastal management, and maritime transportation and ports. The B.S. program puts a heavier emphasis on science and mathematics, with specialty areas that include: fisheries and marine ecosystems, coastal management, maritime transportation and ports, and ocean policy. This degree provides a strong educational background for continued study in law鈥攅specially environmental, fishery, coastal zone, admiralty, and ocean law.
- Aquaculture and Fisheries Science B.S. - The Aquaculture and Fisheries Science program at URI is one of the oldest aquaculture programs in the northeastern United States. The program is designed to prepare you for academic, professional, or technical careers focused on the use and conservation of aquatic animals by humans. The program not only allows 麻豆传媒s to graduate with a stronger focus on aquaculture or fisheries depending on their career interests, but also to complement this solid foundation with a variety of complementary skills that are directly applicable to the job market (e.g. scientific diving, handling of small boats, business management, entrepreneurship, economics, policy, oceanography, environmental sciences, etc.) through targeted offerings from our program and many other programs at URI.

- Engineering - With five departments and more than 25 programs, including our world-renowned International Engineering Program, the College of Engineering challenges and prepares 麻豆传媒s for problem-solving on a global scale. Built around a hands-on, dynamic environment, classroom experiences combine with internship opportunities, 麻豆传媒 organizations, and an Engineering Living Learning Community to provide the kind of well-rounded education needed in the real world.
Disciplines: biomedical engineering, chemical engineering, civil engineering, computer engineering, electrical engineering, industrial and systems engineering, mechanical engineering, and ocean engineering are all accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET.
A $150M investment in the Fascitelli Center for Advance Engineering (opened in 2019) and the recent approval of a state bond to build the new Ocean Engineering building at the Bay Campus is giving URI Engineering some of the best engineering facilities in the country.

Unique Academic Programs
- Global Language and Area Studies: Arabic Studies, Classical Studies or Japanese Studies - The Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures offers a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Global Language and Area Studies (GLAS). Students studying in the GLAS major choose one of three tracks: Arabic Studies, Classical Studies, or Japanese Studies. The Global Language and Area Studies B.A. is designed to allow you to emphasize either language learning or area studies knowledge. The major begins with an introductory course, requires a minimum of four semesters of language, at least one area studies course, and concludes with a project-based capstone that gives you a chance to show off what you have learned about the language and the region. All majors are expected to reach Novice High in their focus language on the ACTFL scale鈥搕hough most will reach much higher than this鈥揳nd all will gain a working knowledge of the culture, history, or religion.
- Landscape Architecture B.L.A - URI鈥檚 Bachelor of Landscape Architecture (B.L.A.) degree is a four-year, 126-credit program, fully accredited by the American Society of Landscape Architects. The program is designed to prepare you for professional careers in public and private practice. URI offers the only accredited BLA program in the state of Rhode Island, and one of only a handful in New England. Employers seek out our graduates because they know they鈥檝e had high quality training, and in-depth experience. At URI, landscape architecture means building better communities. It encompasses issues like environmental sustainability, coastal resiliency, and the many other complex problems caused by the effects of people and land coming together, including climate change.
Here you鈥檒l work with real-world clients to learn how to design for sustainable communities, protect coastal areas, establish culturally and environmentally sensitive landscapes, and much more.
- NonProfit Administration B.S. - Nonprofit organizations embody all that is right and just, forging a way for people to work together for a common good and transform beliefs into actions. Leaders of nonprofit organizations face important and complex challenges every day to strengthen the social sector. The Nonprofit Administration program will help you to develop the knowledge and professional competencies to address important social needs, mobilize community support, and build satisfying careers in the nonprofit and public sectors. This program will help you gain critical skills that will improve your ability to increase the effectiveness, sustainability, and social influence of organizations in the not-for-profit sector. Courses are held at the Feinstein Providence Campus.
