LUXEMBOURG - EU ministers have supported an advisory that Washington issued telling American travellers to beware of potential terrorist threats in Europe.

The European Union interior ministers announced their decision after U.S. Deputy Homeland Security Secretary Jane Holl Lute briefed them about the advisory in Luxembourg.

Belgian Interior Minister Annemie Turtelboom, who chaired Thursday's meeting of several hours, said the Americans "have a lot of reasons" for the alert.

EU Interior Affairs Commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom agreed, saying: "We have no reason to question the threat level indicated by the United States."

Last weekend, the U.S. State Department advised American citizens living or travelling in Europe to take more precautions about their personal security.
