After a day of rumours, French actress Marion Cotillard has hit back at allegations she was involved in the demise of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's marriage.

In a statement posted to Instagram, Cotillard says she's not used to commenting on matters such as this, or taking them seriously, but she felt compelled to speak up.

"Firstly, many years ago, I met the man of my life, father of our son and of the baby we are expecting. He is my love, my best friend, the only one that I need," she wrote.

She went on to deny reports that she was "devastated" by the prospect of being linked to the failure of the A-listers marriage, and offered up her hope that the stars would "find peace in this very tumultuous moment."

Pitt and Jolie had been a couple for 12 years, but only married for two.

Jolie is petitioning for physical custody of 15-year-old Maddox, 12-year-old Pax, 11-year-old Zahara, 10-year-old Shiloh, and 8-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne, with visitation rights for Pitt, who said in a statement to People how "saddened" he is.
