Lena Dunham's boyfriend says he doesn't feel the need to shield the "Girls" star from criticism.

Jack Antonoff -- who has been dating Dunham since 2012 after they were set up on a blind date by his sister and comedian Mike Birbiglia -- says he isn't overprotective of her because they have no problem switching off and being a "normal" couple at home.

Asked about protecting the 28-year-old actress, the guitarist exclusively told BANG Showbiz at the Wireless Festival in London on Sunday that it wasn't something he really thinks about.

"We're just home being normal people, eating, sleeping and relaxing, so all the noises of the world are easy to turn off," he said.

Dunham is regularly criticised for her figure, her outspoken personality and for baring her body on the HBO series "Girls."

The 30-year-old rocker, who was performing at the music festival with his new band Bleachers, also said he and Dunham always make time for each other, no matter how busy they are.

"We're like any other people, lots of people manage that - if one's a teacher and one's a cop; they have crazy scheduling issues too. Time is hard. But you figure it out."

The "Some Nights" hitmaker revealed that Dunham has inspired several of his new band's songs.

"Yes, of course Lena's inspired some songs. You'll know right off the bat when you hear it which ones are about her."
