For years, Kathy Bates has believed she missed thanking someone pivotal during her acceptance speech after she won the Oscar for best actress in 1991 for her performance in 鈥淢isery.鈥
During an interview with in which she promoted her new series 鈥淢atlock,鈥 Bates talked to Ben Mankiewicz about her Oscar moment and her mother, Bertye鈥檚, response.
鈥淲hen I won the Oscar for 鈥楳isery,鈥 she said, 鈥業 don鈥檛 know what all the excitement [is] about, you didn鈥檛 discover the cure for cancer,鈥欌 Bates recalled.
She also said she forgot to thank her mom during her acceptance speech, but Mankiewicz disputed that and showed her a video of her remarks in which she did, in fact, acknowledge her mother.
Bates was shocked and became visually emotional.
鈥淭hank you,鈥 she said to Mankiewicz. 鈥淲hy did I think I didn鈥檛 thank her?鈥
The elder Bates died in 1997 and her daughter said her mother 鈥渟hould have had my life.鈥
鈥淲hen she died, I said come into me. I wanted her spirit to come into me,鈥 Bates said. 鈥淓ven though we had so many difficulties, I wanted her spirit to come into me and enjoy everything I was enjoying because of what she鈥檇 given up.鈥
Bates has said that starring in the reboot of the procedural drama 鈥淢atlock鈥 will be her final role as she plans on retiring.
