Jenna Fischer is highlighting Breast Cancer Awareness Month by sharing that she is now 鈥渃ancer free鈥 after she was diagnosed with the disease in October 2023.
Fischer, 50, detailed her cancer journey on her Instagram page on Tuesday, that she was diagnosed with stage I triple-positive breast cancer 鈥 an aggressive form of breast cancer fuelled by the estrogen and progesterone hormones and the HER2 protein, according to the 鈥 last year after going in for a routine mammogram.
To treat her cancer, she had a lumpectomy 鈥渢o remove the tumor,鈥 radiation, infusions and chemotherapy, which she wrote caused her to lose her hair.
鈥淚鈥檓 happy to say that I was recently re-screened, and the treatments worked. I am cancer free,鈥 Fischer wrote. 鈥淚 will continue to be treated and monitored to help me stay that way.鈥
鈥淭he Office鈥 star posted a photo of herself sporting what she described as a 鈥減atchy pixie鈥 haircut, writing that she wanted to showcase a photo of herself now 鈥渓ooking happy and healthy to go along with this news.鈥
Fischer decided to make her announcement this week to 鈥渋mplore鈥 her followers to get their annual mammograms, writing that her tumor 鈥渨as so small it could not be felt on a physical exam.鈥
In May, CNN reported that women at average risk of breast cancer are advised to get a mammogram every other year starting at age 40 and until age 74, according to recommendations from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force.
Fischer also wrote that she wants other women going through cancer treatments to feel less alone.
鈥淎s anyone who has had a cancer diagnosis knows, your life changes immediately. It becomes all about doctor appointments, test results, treatments and recovering from treatments,鈥 she wrote. 鈥淚t takes a village to fight cancer, and I have had an amazing village.鈥
That village, Fischer wrote, comprised her team of doctors and nurses, other survivors who shared their story with her, her family and her friends 鈥 including her former 鈥淥ffice鈥 co-star and current 鈥淥ffice Ladies鈥 podcast co-host Angela Kinsey, who she said 鈥減rotected me and advocated for me鈥 along the way.
Fischer also expressed gratitude for her husband, Lee Kirk, who 鈥渉as been by my side through all of this.鈥
Fischer, Kirk and their two children celebrated the end of her treatment, she wrote, by ceremoniously ringing a bell in their backyard 鈥渨ith everyone throwing confetti.鈥
