With "Sea of Trees," "The Lobster," "The Tale of Tales" and "Macbeth" in the selection, hordes of stars are expected to step out on the red carpet at the 68th Cannes Film Festival, which takes place May 13 to 24.

Aside from the celebrities on the official jury (Jake Gyllenhaal, Sophie Marceau, Sienna Miller, Guillermo del Toro, Xavier Dolan, Rossy de Palma and Rokia Traore), several world-renowned actors and directors are expected to attend the festival and its exclusive screenings.

Gus Van Sant is due to present his latest feature "Sea of Trees," which stars Matthew McConaughey, while Italian helmer Matteo Garrone will likely attend the screening of his new film "The Tale of Tales" with Salma Hayek and French actor Vincent Cassel.

Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara are expected to make an appearance for Todd Haynes' "Carol," while Marion Cotillard and Michael Fassbender are due to attend Justin Kurzel's "Macbeth." The screening of Yorgos Lanthimos's "The Lobster" should bring Colin Farrell, Rachel Weisz and Léa Seydoux out on the red carpet, while Denis Villeneuve's "Sicario" is due to be screened in the presence of Emily Blunt, Benicio del Toro and Josh Brolin. Joachim Trier's "Louder than Bombs" will likely be attended by Isabelle Huppert and Jesse Eisenberg.

Huppert could also come out for "The Valley of Love," a drama from director Guillaume Nicloux, which joined the competition late in the game. The French actress co-stars with Gérard Depardieu, who might return to Cannes following his appearance last year for the highly publicized drama "Welcome to New York." Also present at the 2014 edition, as one of the stars of the opening film "Grace of Monaco," Tim Roth could return for Michel Franco's "Chronic," the second film added to the official selection on April 23.

Out of the competition, still in the limelight

In a more relaxed atmosphere, Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron could arrive in Cannes as the stars of "Mad Max: Fury Road," which will be screened the day after the opening ceremonies in the out of competition section. Emma Stone and Joaquin Phoenix are expected to come out for Woody Allen's 50th film, "Irrational Man." Nathalie Portman could also make the trip to Cannes to present her feature debut as a director, "A Tale of Love and Darkness," in a midnight screening.

Finally, French stars Catherine Deneuve and Benoît Magimel will almost certainly be in attendance for "La Tête Haute," the opening film of this year's festival.
